Origins and history : Traditionally madras was dyed with vegetable dyes which bleed when the fabric is washed. This led to the "bleeding madras" look popular in the 1960s, whereby the appearance of the textile changed with every wash. The fabric is named for the former Indian city of Madras, now renamed Chennai.
