Description : A coat like garment, traditionally worn by men in India and several other Asian countries, fitted close to the body, of knee-length or longer and opening in front with button-fastenings. Women are increasingly adopting a variation of the Sherwani in contempory Asian fashions.

Origins and history : The Sherwani appeared during the 18th century in British occupied India, as a fusion of the Salwar kameez with the British frock coat. It was gradually adopted by most of the Indian aristrocracy and later by the general population, as a more westernized form of traditional attire. The Sherwani is the national dress for men in Pakistan. A modified version of the Sherwani is the Nehru jacket.
